We all know that we should be practicing healthy lifestyle habits. We’re told that they will help us live longer, feel better, and have more energy.
Yet many of us still find it hard to put them into practice. Changing your habits is hard work, and sometimes we need just a little bit more incentive.
If this sounds like you, consider this – healthy lifestyle habits can be good for your wallet as well. Times are tough and any extra money we have in our wallets at the end of the month is welcome.
So, with that in mind, here are a few ways that healthy lifestyle habits can actually help you to save money.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits that are Good for Your Wallet
You’ll Spend Less on Food
One bad habit that a lot of us have is we eat too much. Specifically, we eat too much food that isn’t good for us. We buy a ton of snacks that provide no real nutritional value.
In fact, Americans spend a whopping $1200 a year on fast food. That’s $100 every month on unhealthy food. Cutting back on these foods will not only help your diet, but they will save you money.
The next time you’re making a grocery list, or you’re at the store, really think about the things you’re buying. Do you need that snack? Is there a healthier alternative you could get instead?
Even if you end up spending the same amount of money, you’ll at least be putting it towards food that is good for you. Then, as the healthy foods fill you up more, you’ll eventually start eating less, and you’ll spend less on food as a result.
Spend Less on Things You Don’t Need
Another bad habit for many is spending on things we don’t really need. We buy a new cellphone the minute the newest model is released, we get new video games and, movies
Not to mention and all sorts of different video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. The result is that we spend more time on the couch staring at a screen.
All of this time watching TV, or playing video games, or checking social media, isn’t good for us. Not only is sitting around bad for your heart but being on your phone all the time is bad for your mental health.
So, wait to make your next frivolous purchase and think about whether you really need it and how it will impact your health. Chances are you if put the purchase off for just a few weeks, you’ll want it less, and you’ll save yourself some money.
Avoid Long Term Health Problems
If you really want to save money in the long-term, you’ll want to avoid complicated health problems. While some of these are unavoidable, unfortunately, there are some things you can do to make others less likely.
For instance, you could not smoke. Not only are cigarettes terrible for you, but they are a large expense. If you already smoke, the sooner you quit, the sooner you’ll start finding a large chunk of change in your bank account each week.
Another thing you could do is schedule regular visits to the doctor and dentist. Doctors can detect any problems early, helping to keep them from getting worse.
If you have insurance, you should be going for at least a yearly checkup to make sure everything is good. The same goes for the dentist. If you haven’t been to one in a while, schedule an appointment with a local dentist now and avoid large expenses down the road.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits Pass Down to Your Kids
Finally, your healthy habits will not only save you money on yourself but on your kids as well. If your kids are following the same healthy habits as you are, you’ll spend less money on them.
For instance, now that you’re not buying yourself junk food, you’re probably not buying it for your kids as well. Or, since you didn’t get that new gaming system when it came out, your kids now have one less reason to sit in front of the TV, and might go outside to play instead.
Keep this in mind when you’re trying to develop healthy habits for yourself, knowing that your kids are benefiting as well.
Use Whatever You Can to Motivate Yourself
For some people, losing weight is a strong motivator for healthy lifestyle habits. Others want to have less stress in their life. You have to find the motivation that works for you, and maybe yours is having more money at the end of the month.
Hopefully, this article was able to show you how healthy lifestyle habits can not only improve your life but also improve your financial situation. Changing habits is hard, but if you put in the time, your body, mind, and wallet will all thank you for it.
