Are you looking to save money on kid’s clothing? Children’s clothing can really take a huge bite out of your budget. More so then your own wardrobe even if your clothing is more expensive. The reason being is that you are not going to outgrow your clothing any time soon and you take care of those investments.

On the other hand, children grow like weeds, many times they will outgrow their clothing before they get your money’s worth out of them. And if they do not outgrow them, they wear them out pretty quickly.

I love shopping clearance racks, I mean what could be better than buying brand new clothing for up to 90% off regular retail price. Department stores will put seasonal items on clearance year-round to make room for the upcoming season and new arrivals.

Take advantage of those clearance items when you have the chance. Every time I walk into any store, I always check out the clearance aisles, racks, and shelves. When searching, you may not find anything that fits your children right now but you need to think ahead.

If there are items at great prices that may only fit your child in six months, why not buy them when you can get them for cheap. Your children will keep growing no matter how much you don’t want them to.

Seek Out Clothing Swaps

Participating in clothing swaps in your area is a great way to save money on kid’s clothing. These are usually held in church basements or community buildings. You basically take your children’s outgrown clothing in and trade them in for clothing that they can wear.

You can even make your own clothing swap group. Recruited a bunch of your mom friends and agree to gather every six months or so to swap out your children’s clothing. Everybody in the group can take turns hosting. Plus, it a great opportunity to get together with friends and talk mom shop.

Hit Up Consignment Shops

Seeking out clothing at consignment shops is a great way to save money on kid’s clothing. A lot of the time you can find great clothing that barely even looks like they have been worn; and even some with the tags still on them at cheap prices.

Don’t just limit yourself to shopping consignment, you can also check out thrift stores and garage sales. A lot of the time you can get a full trash bag of clothing for five dollars or less. They are usually separated into groups of sizes and are gender-specific.

Buy Gender-Neutral Clothing

If you plan on having more children, it’s a good idea to buy gender-neutral clothing. This way, once your first child outgrows them you can store them away until you need those items for your second child and so on.

Those yellow, green and tan items could be matched up with a cute pink headband or little blue bow tie if you want to add a gender-specific look to the outfits.

You can also do this for nursery items which can really add up to a lot of money. Then all you need to do is just add a few gender-specific accent colored items to personalize your nursery for each child as needed.

Take Advantage of Hand Me Downs

Embrace hand me downs from friends and family. I know some moms who are embarrassed or even insulted when someone offers them hand me downs. But that is just the wrong way to look at the offer. You are being offered the clothing because they are still in great shape. Plus the person offering would rather give those items to you then bring them to a thrift store.

I love getting hand me downs from my friends and family, it’s kind of like Christmas. Your children get a bunch of great clothing which makes them happy and you save money on your kid’s clothing. Re-purpose clothes that your child has outgrown or that may be a bit worn. If your child has some pants that are worn out at the knees, you can cut the legs down and make a pair of shorts out of them. You can do the same if they had a growth spurt and those pants are now a bit short for your child.
